The DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC of CONGO

The Democratic Republic of Congo, formerly known as Zaire, is the third largest country in Africa with a population of over 63,000,000 – greater than that of the UK, France or Italy, and all the Scandinavian countries combined. Bordered by nine other countries it is located in the very centre of the continent, but has access to a forty-kilometre stretch of Atlantic coastline via the Congo river. Since 1998 the country has suffered greatly from the devastating Second Congo War - the world’s deadliest conflict since Word War II. Malnutrion affects two-thirds of the population.
